I am surprised by some other's reviews. We are west coast folks, and this was some of the best Asian fusion we have had! Particularly the seafood. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. Presentations were attractive and inviting. Front-of-house manager was more pro-active and effective than most. Wine list was eclectic and interesting. Prix fixe menu was a great choice for a Sunday night. Salmon tempura was wonderful. Prices were not inconsistent with what I expect for a downtown big city joint. I highly recommend this place.
5 stars. I had the absolute best meal here. I can't believe it's closed and I can't go back! Any place that serves me short ribs is a friend of mine! I had short rib egg rolls here that were to die for. And the service was impeccable. Price was a bit steep, but I was on per diem so I didn't care. Pls excuse me while I mourn this loss...
I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating, it was amazing! My friend and I came here for sushi. We tried the appetizer of calamari & octopus. They were grilled perfectly, just a hint of crisp. It came out on a large plate with fresh ginger. We shared 3 rolls and enjoyed every bite! They also have some pretty interesting cocktails on the menu...I'd recommend you try one. I'm a sushi lover, but my boyfriend isn't. Oya has non sushi small plates on the menu as well, so don't let your non sushi friends deter you! I can't wait to go back!!
What is there not to like about Oya? +Attractive Atmosphere/Ambiance +Delicious food +Excellent happy hour (Drink n Tell Hour 5:00-8:00pm) +Yummy cocktails +Cool clientele I've visited this Asian-fusion restaurant many times to meet friends. Most recently, my friend and I arrived just before lunch was over. The attendants graciously seated us and took our drink orders. There was only 1 other party seated on the other side of the restaurant. This was the first time I had ever seen Oya empty or with natural lighting shining through so I took advantage of the opportunity to evaluate how stunning the decor was. We ordered the Typhoon sushi roll (shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, spicy mayo), Atlantic salmon, and the braised miso chicken. I told my friend that it was a Yelp requirement for me to actually taste his chicken entrée or else, I wouldn't be able to review. He obliged. Everything was delightful and presented well.
We visited Oya on a Saturday night with same-day reservations and were seated almost immediately. The service was efficient, friendly, and helpful throughout the night. And the decor? Well, this place is amazing! I love the white walls and the fire motif - they go quite well together. The restaurant has an open, airy vibe to it. The lounge is gorgeous and has a classy, trendy, professional atmosphere. It's definitely nice for special occasions and date nights. We ordered: -Lobster Dip appetizer (crostini, artichoke, and spinach). This was a perfect appetizer for two and I was impressed with how generous they were with the lobster pieces in the dip. -Kobe Burger (bacon, aged cheddar, garlic rosemary aioli, pickled onions) with truffle fries. We both decided to order this and both loved it - it was a perfect portion, packed full of flavor! -Pineapple Ginger Mint cocktail (pineapple ginger mint vodka, elderflower, lime). This was really fruity and delicious. -Bourbon Peach Smash cocktail (Bourbon, fresh lime juice, agave). My bf ordered this and loved it. I'd previously visited SEI in Penn Quarter, which is owned by the same owners, and liked that a lot as well. And I will now certainly want to try SAX, which is the third and newest restaurant in this trio of trendy restaurants in Penn Quarter by the same owners.
Everything about Oya makes me happy. For one, the space is beautiful. I like the whole fire and ice theme that they have going on throughout the restaurant. I also like the fact that, although the bar area is small, they have additional "bar-like" seating along the wall on the side as well as a little lounge section off to the side. I've been to Oya for dinner, late-night and, of course, happy hour. My favorite thing about Oya has to be the happy hour. Happy hour is all night at the bar Monday through Thursday, beginning at 5pm, and until 8pm on Fridays. And if that wasn't enough of an incentive, not only do you get happy hour pricing on drinks all night, but you also get happy hour pricing on the food as well. My favorite drinks here are the Momotaro, the Scorpion [something] and the Dark & Stormier. The Momotaro is probably the strongest drink and the Scorpion (kiss/bite? forgot the rest of the name- literally just ask for a "Scorpion") has the most bite (made with peppers). The food on the happy hour menu consists of various sliders/mini sandwiches (which come with mini taster tots) as well as specialty sushi rolls. My favorite of the dishes have to be: the chicken slider, salmon roll (like a lobster roll, but with salmon), crispy tuna [sushi] roll and the vegetable tempura [sushi] roll. I'd also recommend the banana bread pudding (w/ rum raisin ice cream) for dessert, although that is full price. If you love the sister restaurants (SEI, SAX), then you will definitely love Oya. Definitely a great place to take a date, especially if you are on a budget but don't want to look cheap...your date doesn't have to know that it's happy hour.
Being a huge sushi fan, I was super excited to be finally visiting this place last weekend. It's such an awesome place! The decor is warm and inviting, the crowd was great, service was awesome! and food was great too! Turns out the place had sushi, and I was with a bunch of friends who had not tried sushi yet, so I turned into the sushi connoisseur (I am no expert at sushi, I've just had it more often than the others here :p) Deep down in my heart, I am praying - God, Please let this place live up to it's reputation, please let me order some super awesome rolls, please let everyone like them! Phew.. a lot of pressure there my friend ! Anyways, wit one last fleeting prayer in my heart, I order some wine, appetizers and sushi for the whole group.. here is how it went.. APPETIXERS Yellow Tomato Soup - More like a puree, really great texture! Yuzu Saffron Chicken - Oh so good..! Fish and Chips - Meh.. not a fan really.. my fish was too smelly :( Baby rack of Lamb - savory and tangy.. loved every bite! Edamamme - Umm.. pretty decent, nothing outstanding SUSHI Shrimp Tempura - it was perfect as a start for sushi 101! Crunchy and savory, everyone loved it! Spicy Crunchy Shrimp - The the right thing to order! Spicy California Roll - yes, yes, yes!! Rock & Roll (eel) - loved it! :) :) Typhoon - umm.. It was ok, not a fan of the crab salad. Godzilla Roll (aligator) - Yes, I decided to go all out at Sushi 101, and boy, did I love it.. yesss!! It was great! :) :) DESSERTS Pineapple Upside Down Cake - loved it Molten Chocolate Cake - Maybe it descended from heaven directly?! :p Banana Bread Pudding - yum yum yummmy!! So Sushi 101 went better than I had expected, will be back here soon!
Oya is easily the most gorgeous lounge on the block, a good spot to enjoy a glass, as long as you don't mind ponying up cash. We sat at the bar and studied the drink menu, enjoying the chic ambiance. (There's food, too.) I had a lychee gimlet ($13), while my associate sipped on a Moulin Rouge gimlet (13). My cocktail was delicious, made with organic gin, canned lychee, and lime juice. The Moulin Rouge was mango heavy, full of mango-infused vodka, mango and guava juices, and finished off with triple sec. As the night winded down, we relaxed, chatting with friendly bartender Yuko - thanks for the spot-on service - before heading out.
Great modern, trendy place that manages to still feel cozy and welcoming, despite all the white/stark decor. The first time I went, I had a good impression from the start, and they just kept coming. The waitstaff is top-notch. The food is just as amazing, from the appetizers to desserts. I've had at least 5 different entrees, including the lobster and tempura. They were expertly cooked and presented. I'll continue to go back to Oya. To top it all off, they have lunch and dinner pre-fixe menus ($18 lunch and $28 dinner) through December 2008, so it's even become a great value considering the atmosphere, service, and food quality. Next time I go back, I'm definitely going with a pre-fixe meal.
We had a superb time here. I called about half an hour in advance on a Tuesday (albeit a Tuesday before a federal holiday) and snagged some reservations for lunch without a hitch. Two year anniversary with $19 fixe prixe lunch menu, to boot! It's this menu that I'll be discussing for the most part here. My crew of five walked in and were seated almost immediately, not allowing us an opportunity to even spot the opulent, plush lounge area that apparently serves as a waiting bench and faces the white bar with an inset fireplace. The entire place was chic - almost to the point of excess, but stopping at the verge. There's a lot of white. A LOT of it. And Oya has this fire and water theme going on, with plenty of mirrors in the dining area, a fireplace along one wall, and a curtain of flowing water over the window looking into the kitchen. I think our table may have been the only one that was dressed in street clothes (shorts and t-shirts). Virtually everyone else in the restaurant was attired in business suits and/or skirts and blouses. The service was also impeccable. Almost as soon as we were seated, wait staff were buzzing over to our table to ask for drink orders. One of the suggestions made was a lemonade, which three of our five ordered. They brought out glasses, along with an additional carafe full of lemon-lime refreshing icy goodness. I asked our waiter if they had any signature drinks, and he suggested their Oya Juice, a blend of citrus fruit juices and mixed with coconut cream. No, it's not alcoholic. Yes, I ordered it and enjoyed it thoroughly. I have to second the chilled mint pea soup for the starter. It's served with a little island of flan in the center. It's creamy, cool, refreshing, and green. Honestly, it's a very unique experience; those with less adventurous tastes might lean toward something less exotic. The two of us that had the mint pea soup raved about it, though. I had the scallops for an entree, although I tried the chicken salad (very Thai-y) and the salmon (juicy and flaky). I have to say that I think I hit the jackpot on my dish, though. The scallops were large and juicy; not stringy or rubbery at all. The scallops were served next to a bed of tasty rice noodles and draped atop the mound was a lump of the most delectable mushrooms I've ever had: hen of the woods. I HAD to share my 'shrooms with everyone else, they were so flavorful, earthy, and rich. I'd go back just to have more of these fungi. I can't possibly rave enough about them... I think I'm drooling right now writing about them. Quick warning about dessert. I believe that both the chocolate decadence and the bread pudding are absolutely superb, but once you dive into one, you will be unable to enjoy the other fully. That was the consensus of my crew. The chocolate dessert was a fudgy outer layer covering a hunk of dark chocolate ice cream topping a hazelnut wafer, all on top of fresh sliced strawberries. The bread pudding was a sweeter offering, with just the right consistency and moistness; again, it verged on the edge of sogginess, but never crossed over the line. Totally awesome experience. Great service, great ambiance, superb food, and all at an extremely reasonable price for the quality. Highly recommended!
